ABOUT
Our mission is to educate the world about the symptoms of stroke and the need for immediate action.

Stroke is the second leading cause of death, the third leading cause of disability and one of the main reasons that children lose their grandparents. The sad reality is that most stroke patients do not receive treatment because they arrive at hospital too late. People can survive with their lives intact if they receive fast and effective acute care.

It is therefore extremely important that we continue to increase awareness of the key symptoms of stroke and give people the confidence and clarity to seek immediate emergency care.

ABOUT US
The FAST Heroes school-based campaign was developed by the Department of Education and Social Policy at the University of Macedonia, and has been made possible by support from the Angels Initiative. The Lions Club International is the official implementation partner of the campaign. The FAST Heroes campaign is endorsed by the World Stroke Organization.

The Angels Initiative is a healthcare improvement project aimed at improving stroke care across the world - by helping set up new Stroke Ready Hospitals and improving the quality of care in existing hospitals.

The Lions Club International consists of 1.4 million caring men and women serving together so they can make a lasting impact and change more lives.

The World Stroke Organization is the leading global organization in the fight against stroke. They develop evidence-based guidelines and practical implementation resources to support healthcare professionals to improve the quality of stroke care.
SAVING THE WORLD, ONE GRANDPARENT AT A TIME
We believe children can help make a real difference, acting as a catalyst to spark interest amongst their wider family. In fact, educating children is proven to be a viable way to enhance their community’s stroke preparedness.

Our fun, engaging and interactive educational programme, primarily aimed at children aged 5 to 9 years, teaches them about empathy and love, as well as providing practical lifesaving skills. Children are empowered with tools to help fulfil their mission of educating their grandparents.

The campaign focuses on the unique bond between children and their grandparents, as the average age of stroke patients is around 70 years of age. We know that grandparents are an especially important source of unconditional love, patience, and kindness for many children around the world. Given stroke is one of the biggest reasons that children lose their grandparents - to death or disability - we are essentially fighting for them to have more quality time together.
ABOUT STROKE
THE REASON WE WORRY ABOUT OUR GRAND HEROES
A stroke is like a Heart Attack, the only difference is that it happens in your brain. A stroke can be due to a blockage in one of the arteries also called an ischemic stroke or as a result of bleeding in the brain also known as herorrhagic stroke. Both types of stroke eventually result in a sudden loss of neurological function due to the death of the brain cells in a specific region caused by an interruption in the blood supply to a part of the brain.
In ischemic strokes, this interruption is caused by a clot, and in hemorrhagic stroked, it is caused mainly by swelling of the brain caused by bleeding in the enclosed skull.
Imagine for a second you open your car’s bonnet and you unplug one of the electrical wires that get power from the battery. What will happen is that the lights or hooter or whatever is supposed to be served by the wire will stop working. The same with stroke. The loss of neurological function could manifest in the patient suddenly losing the ability to use one of his arms or ability to speak or understand speech for example.
You can think of this loss of neurological function almost as an interruption of the electrical connection between the brain and the body part or function that the specific area of the brain is supposed to serve.
As different functions of your body are controlled by different regions in the brain, the disability after the stroke would depend on where the artery was blocked.
