Reframing the FASTHEROES 112 educational program during “lock-down”
To date, eight schools and 383 children and their families, in Greece (Thessaloniki, Alexandroupolis & Athens), completed the mission of becoming FAST Heroes. As FAST Heroes they were trained in class to identify stroke symptoms and seek help by dialing 112.
Armed with bucket loads full of passion and a singular vision a team consisting of health care professionals and educational experts from the Department of Educational and Social Policy at the University of Macedonia, Greece started working with the Angels Initiative. A team needs a name, and as the mission of this team was to develop the School based educational elements of the FAST Heroes campaign, they called themselves the Super Grand League (SGL).
South Africa – Kids taught how to Save their heroes
In South Africa, more than 360 people suffer from a stroke every day, of whom 90 are left disabled and 110 die. If stroke sufferers can get to a stroke-ready hospital faster, disability and death can be prevented.
Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability globally, with low and middle-income populations suffering the most. In Brazil, the World Stroke Organisation is at the forefront of an effort to cut the incidence of stroke in half.
World Stroke Organization (WSO) Endorses the FAST Heroes
The WSO has recently endorsed the FAST Heroes program and will be working to pilot and evaluate this kindergarten-level education initiative and help with localisation of resources and activities for communities around the world.
The Angels Initiative has as their mission to increase the number of patients treated in stroke ready hospitals and to optimise the quality of treatment in all existing stroke centres. They are building a global community of stroke centres and stroke ready hospitals, working every day to improve the quality of treatment for every stroke patient.

This campaign was developed by the Department of Education and Social Policy of the University of Macedonia and has been made possible by the support from the Angels Initiative. The Angels Initiative is a Healthcare improvement project aimed at improving stroke care across the world. This is achieved by helping set up new Stroke Ready Hospitals and improving the quality of care in existing Stroke hospitals. The eventual goal is that all stroke patients have access to the same level of care irrespective of where they are in the world. The Angels Initiative is an initiative by Boehringer Ingelheim and is endorsed by the World Stroke Organisation (WSO), The European Stroke Organisation (ESO) and has as partners supporting the initiative the Stroke Alliance For Europe (SAFE) and Medtronic.
